What’s your design style?
Did you ever think that your landscaping could have its own type of design? Sure it does. It’s a personal style that you like or follow. We design style-specific landscapes all of the time. It’s similar to the interior design style of your home and I feel the style should complement the home – not fight it.
Current landscape styles include tropical, traditional, modern, contemporary, formal or a combination, hybrid type of design. The tropical landscapes are very popular in Florida and include lots of color, texture and variety of plants. It’s easy to over plant this style since everything grows quickly in Florida. The traditional style has symmetry, maybe a few pops of color and looks best with traditional architecture. Think azaleas, magnolias and gardenias in this landscape – almost a southern style.
Modern and contemporary styles are all the rage today. You see all of the modern new builds and architecture happening everywhere. Landscaping these homes is not as easy as it may appear. You need clean lines, interesting hardscapes, architectural plants and trees, and amazing lighting for after dark. Travertine, artificial turf, boulders, topiaries and cutting edge light fixtures work best here.
The formal landscape is not as popular these days but is fun to design and install. It’s very tailored and requires a lot of trimming and maintenance once established. Exact symmetry, beds of color, tight layers, and sculpture are popular here. Naturally, formal architecture works best – think rows of perfect trees, a long brick driveway and tightly trimmed plantings as you see a fountain and leaded glass front doors.
Lastly, the combination of hybrid design uses several styles to form one cohesive and interesting design. We mix several designs to create something unique for our clients. Traditional elements can lighten up formal design, traditional and tropical elements can create a relaxed feel, and modern design can be softened with warmer elements of color, wood, and water.
Lighting and water features like pools and fountains play a big part in all of the mentioned styles and can be grouped into your particular style as well.
Think about the style that excites you most. What are the elements that make up the interior and exterior of your house? You may have just found your style.
